How can one multipurpose tool solve multiple everyday challenges faced by people with limited hand movement?
This simple yet powerful question is where the story of The Able Company (BeyondBarrier Products Ltd.) begins.
Founded in 2023, The Able Company created Hands-On, a thoughtfully designed multi-purpose adaptive tool. It enables people with limited hand range, restricted movement, lack of coordination, and reduced hand strength to carry out everyday activities independently.
The idea behind Hands-On was born from a deeply personal experience.
Founder Ms. Meera Vora’s daughter, Praaya, was born with Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita (AMC) a rare, non-progressive but regressive congenital condition marked by severe joint contractures, muscle weakness, and restricted movement in multiple parts of the body.
Like many parents, Ms. Meera witnessed the everyday struggles that often go unnoticed, something as basic as eating independently becoming a challenge. Instead of accepting these limitations, Backed by strong design skills as an architect & a passionate product designer, she thought why not design a single tool that stays multipurpose, and help many more Praayas to be independent?
The initial concept and sketches took shape through conversations with Dr. Kanan Doshi, Praaya’s Occupational Therapist. With years of clinical experience and a shared vision, Dr. Doshi joined as Co-founder, and together, they brought Hands-On to life.
Hands-On is a first-of-its-kind, multi-use adaptive hand device. It supports individuals with limited hand movement, restricted range, coordination challenges, and low hand strength in performing essential daily tasks on their own.
Designed for both children and adults, it is available in left-hand and right-hand configurations, with wide or narrow grip options to suit individual needs.
At its core, Hands-On is built with one simple intent, to support independence, dignity, and the quiet joy of doing things by users on their own.
Since its launch, Hands-On has made a meaningful difference in the lives of its users, helping them eat independently, participate more actively in daily routines, and regain confidence in their own abilities. For many families, it has reduced dependency; for users, it has restored a sense of control and self-belief.
Due to their impact, the Able Company has been honoured with several accolades, such as
IITMIC KRIA’TIVE Innovation Awards, Special Jury Award / Jury’s Choice Award for Social Innovation 2023,
TATA Social Enterprise Challenge (13th Edition), 1st Runner-Up,
Indian Federation of Neurorehabilitation (IFNR) Pediatric Neurorehabilitation Update, 2nd Place in Ability Expo Presentation
Startup Mahakumbh (Startup Grand Challenge) winner in Health & Bio Category
ISHTI, Asian Pacific Federation (Society for Hand Therapy) Progress with Purpose Category Award
